The objective
To ensure that all the workforce are aware of the hazards and risks which they may be exposed to from the workplace or from equipment whilst carrying out a job of work.
What are they?
Small bullet point talks on specific subjects highlighting safe working methods and practices to be adopted on site.
Each talk should last no longer than 15 minutes.
When are they done?
They can be used for many situations, including:
- At the beginning of a contract;
- On induction to the site;
- Prior to starting a particularly hazardous operation;
- Prior to using high risk equipment eg access towers, grinders and cutting equipment;
- On a regular basis to reinforce key learning points;
- After an incident, accident or near miss occurance.

Talkers brief
- Do start on time - it emphasises the importance of the sessions
- Do use a noise-free environment - so people can concentrate
- Don't rush through points and speak clearly - so people can understand
- Do pause to allow important points to sink in
- Don't ask questions - it is not a discussion
- Do avoid using jargon where possible - people read jargon differently
- Do look people in the eyes - it shows confusion or misunderstanding
- Do watch body language - it shows a couldn't care less attitude
- Do invite questions at the end - but only on a topic of tool box talk
- Do ensure you take no longer than 15 mins - this is good timing
- Ensure you tell everyone when the next one is, and stick to it!
- Try to aim for the same time every week - your workforce will get used to it and come to expect it.
